Nylon is lightweight, fast-drying, and flies in the slightest breeze, which makes it a favorite for homes and sheltered poles. Poly-Max polyester is a 2-ply, open-weave fabric that stands up to sun, rain, and steady wind, so it is a strong choice for commercial properties and exposed poles. Many flags are also available with reinforced fly-end stitching, since the fly end is where flags wear out first.

A common guideline is a flag whose fly (length) is roughly one-quarter to one-third the height of your flagpole.
